Our
Projects throughout the year include:
Fishing Rodeo - This
is a worthwhile project held at Sharon Johnson Park each spring,
sponsored by the Madison County Commissioners, and is a special
outing for children ages 5 – 15. Our club helps in every
capacity, including parking, giving out prizes (which we provide),
putting worms on hooks and weighing the fish. We also try to keep
the parents from cheating!
Reading is Fundamental
- We visit and read to Head Start classes at a local elementary
school three times a year. This is a particularly rewarding
adventure for our Kiwanians. The Alabama District RIF programs
comprise 50% of the RIF programs in Kiwanis International!
Salvation Army Soup Van
- On the fourth Monday of each month Metro Kiwanis members take the
Soup Van to various sites in Huntsville to bring the evening meal to
the homeless families of our community.
Thanksgiving and Christmas
Deliveries - In cooperation with Christmas Charities
Year 'Round, Metro members deliver food at Thanksgiving and toys at
Christmas to those families in need in our community. This is a
popular project with our members and also with our Sparkman Key
Club.
Salvation Army Bell Ringing
- Each year during the Christmas Season Metro members give hours of
their time ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at the Drake
Avenue Wal-Mart.
IDD Project
- We have been able to meet our club goal with donations to the
Kiwanis International Project and are ranked 9th in the State of
Alabama with a donation of $10,600.
We make donations of money
and time to various projects in the city of
Huntsville. Those include Big Brothers Big Sisters, CASA, The Older
Americans Festival, SafeKids, The Senior Center Kids and Karegivers
Program, Christmas Charities, Better Business Bureau Peer Mediation
Program, Junior Achievement and others.
